My favorite Batman is hands down, Michael Keaton. It probably has to do with the fact that it was the first version of the character that I saw in 1992’s Batman Returns. Sadly that was the last time we would see him under the cape and cowl. But now almost thirty years later Keaton may be gearing up to once again take on the role of Bruce Wayne.
According to The Wrap, Keaton is in talks to return to the role in the upcoming Warner Bros. DC film, The Flash. Talks are currently in the very early stages and there are no details on the extent of his role. This is the Ezra Miller-led film that has been stuck in development for years. Currently It: Chapter 2 director Andres Muschietti is onboard to direct.

According to the source, this film will introduce audiences to the DC Multiverse. Here like in the famous Flash storyline, Flashpoint, Barry Allen travels back in time to prevent his mother’s death. This causes a separate timeline, in which universe is protected by Keaton’s Batman now 30 years older.
The Hollywood Reporter is also reporting that the deal could be for more than just the Flash film. They are envisioning this Bruce Wayne/Batman as somewhat of a Samuel Jackson/Nick Fury character in the MCU. He would serve as a mentor, guide, or even someone pulling strings. So they may be working on a multi-film deal. Warner Bros. has not commented on the subject.
It’s interesting how the man that DC fans want back as Bruce Wayne is the same one that caused a fanboy uproar. Back when Keaton was cast as Batman, fans were not convinced that he was the right man for the role. At the time, he mostly did comedies. With Tim Burton as his director the 1989 Batman was a critical and financial success. He left the role after Burton was replaced with Joel Schumacher for the third film in the franchise, 1995’s Batman Forever.

With said talks being in the early stages this news should be taken with a grain of salt. It would be exciting to see Keaton back as Bruce Wayne as it would set up the perfect segway for a Batman Beyond film. Maybe they could tease Terry McGinnis or the Batsuit in the Flash film. Lots of fun news and ideas from DC these past few months.
