The upcoming Blue Beetle movie has a lot of people excited, and that’s especially true here at LRM Online and The GenreVerse. Our own Manny Gomez and, occasional Slack channel shit-stirrer, Anthony Esteves are always talking about some grand plan with Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. However, it is the Hispanic/Latin American lead character and the cultural/societal impact of this project that has many buzzing. Well, we can add some additional Latin American representation, joining star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), with Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, And Harvey Guillén.
Blue Beetle Casts Bruna Marquezine and Belissa Escobedo As Penny & Milagros Reyes Respectively
Brazilian TV star, Bruna Marquezine, is set to play the female lead and Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle’s love interest. She has been on several shows such as Deus Salve o Rei and Nada Será Como Antes. Also, she has appeared in the films Vou Nadar Até Você and Breaking Through. The interesting thing is, Jaime’s girlfriend is Traci Thirteen, and not Penny, in the source material. Could this be a Spider-Man: Homecoming Liz/MJ thing? We were told Liz was the main love interest and Michelle (MJ) is just a friend during promotion. However, the film proves otherwise in the end. Okay, well in Far From Home it did at least.
As for Los Angeles native Belissa Escobedo, she’ll be playing the younger sister of Jaime. Escobedo did nine episodes of The Baker and the Beauty in 2020. Also, she is in Hulu’s teen comedy film, Sex Appeal.
Why so secret?
As for the guy that SLAYS it as Guillermo de la Cruz in What We Do in the Shadows, Harvey Guillén, there is no word on a character. The Wrap cleverly states his role is “under wraps.” Way to go guys, but does that mean you know it’s something juicy? All I know is the dude can deliver on comedy and heart.

This film looks pretty damn good, based on my own appreciation for Cobra Kai and What We Do in the Shadows. It also has enough buzz to get the move from HBO Max to theaters. In an era of massively popular comic book movies, it’s great to see Hollywood reaching beyond the legacy characters and giving love to some of the newer creations.
