Eddie Murphy’s Hilarious Return To SNL Delivers High Ratings For NBC

Legendary actor and comedian Eddie Murphy made his triumphant return to Saturday Night Live, hosting the show for the first time since his departure as cast mate 35 years ago. Partnered with the extremely popular and talented Lizzo as the musical guest, the episode drew just over 9 million viewers in Live+Same Day audiences, according to Nielsen’s numbers.

The Murphy/Lizzo episode achieved a few more victories under its belt, as reported by Deadline:

SNL‘s 2.5 rating in 18-49 ties the September Season 2 premiere of Fox’s Masked Singer as the #1 highest-rated entertainment series telecast this season in 18-49 L+SD on any network across all dayparts, including primetime. It’s also the highest-rated comedy telecast on any network since the series finale of CBS’ Big Bang Theory on May 16 (3.2).

Murphy’s return to SNL included not only the hilarious resurrections of his classic characters like Mr. Robinson, Buckwheat, and Gumby, but also contained a monologue that featured appearances by Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, and Dave Chappelle. Additionally, the episode kicked off with a cold open poking fun at the PBS Democratic Debates, featuring Kate McKinnon, SNL alumni Rachel Dratch, Jason Sudeikis, Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph, and appearances by Larry David and Alec Baldwin.

While a ratings victory, the show’s last episode 2019 also proved that Murphy is still very much a master performer. Comedy is still his comfort zone and he blended in seamlessly with the current SNL lineup. He even delivered a well-placed dig at Bill Cosby, something he’s done since dating back to his classic 1987 Eddie Murphy Raw stand-up performance, where he mocked the fellow comedian for criticizing his course language. While Cosby’s publicist has responded by calling Murphy a “Hollywood slave,” it is Murphy who will be enjoying his return to the top as the man who was once “America’s dad” continues to rot inside a prison cell for his past sins.
