Ferris Bueller’s Day Off: The Fourth Wall Almost Blocked Matthew Broderick From Taking The Role

While each decade does give off its own sort of vibe none are as easily identifiable as the films of the 1980s. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off one of the more beloved classics from the 80s. Every kid who watched it dreamed of having a ditch day made possible by pulling off a series of small capers.

Matthew Broderick has moved on from the film and the character and been part of many other projects, to me and many others he will always be Ferris Bueller. However, this almost didn’t happen due to Ferris’ breaking of the fourth wall. Broderick had recently been part of two plays in which his characters also addressed the audience. Broderick discussed this while speaking appearing on the Radio Andy podcast. You can check out what he had to say below.

“I thought [the script] was great, and I had a teeny hesitation because having just done [the plays] ‘Brighton Beach [Memoirs]’ and ‘Biloxi [Blues]. I was like, ‘Wow, I’m talking to the audience, just like in these plays… and even in [the 1985 movie] Ladyhawke he talks to the camera a bit. … You know, when you’re young or starting out you think, ‘I have to do something different.'”

I understand not wanting to be typecast, it seems to be a worry of almost all performers in Hollywood. However, isn’t it better to be typecast than not be cast at all? If Daniel Radcliffe can separate himself from Harry Potter, then I’d say it’s possible for most anyone to break away from a role that seems stuck to them.

Broderick continued:

“My memory is, before I had hung up the phone, [my agent] was like behind me in the room, saying, ‘Yes, you should do it.'” Broderick recalled. “He flew to New York. ‘I’ll see you tomorrow. Let’s just not talk about it anymore now, I’ll see you tomorrow,’ and he came and was suddenly in the room with me, saying, ‘Yeah, I do think you should do it.’.. He was right.”

We can all thank Broderick’s agent at the time for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the most epic ditch day ever captured on film. Until the end of the movie, most everything Ferris needed to fall in place, did. And gadzooks did it ever annoy his sister. Yet, when Ferris was caught by Principal Rooney, it was Jeanie to the rescue.

Anyone else sees at least some similarities between Ferris and Jeanie, and Phineas and Candace on Phineas and Ferb? Yes? No?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!
