Final Fantasy XVI Has Reportedly Completed ‘Basic Development And Scenario Production’

Will Final Fantasy XVI hit sooner rather than later?

Game reveals are a tricky thing. As many of us have learned over the decades as fans, you can never rely on them in any real way. Oftentimes, the footage shown way too early, and many aspects of said footage don’t even make the final product. Game mechanics are often likely to change, and all that aside, we’re often still looking at a solid two to three years before we even see the end result. If we’re really unlucky, it’ll never come out. And all this goes double for Square Enix and triple for Final Fantasy games.

So when Final Fantasy XVI was recently revealed during a PlayStation 5, I assumed we were roughly 87 years from its release. However, there was a recent job posting for Square Enix that hints at a great deal of progress for the upcoming JRPG. On the recruitment page is the following statement.

“We have already completed basic development and scenario production, and are continuing to create large-scale resources and build boss battles while expanding our various development tools,” the website reads. “Also, most of our staff are carrying out their work remotely.”

So, what does this mean? Okay, so I’ll admit this isn’t the clearest. In no way is this game anywhere near coming out, that’s for sure. But, it does sound like they’ve at least set a solid foundation for the rest of the game to be built on. When all said and done though, you never know what sort of problems that come with actual development…so who knows?

I expect we’ll likely get a holiday 2022 release, but that’s barring any typical Square Enix delays, which I’m sure are to come.
