Legendary Actress And Filmmaker Penny Marshall Has Died At Age 75

Penny Marshall, star of the comedy series Laverne & Shirley and one of the great filmmakers in Hollywood, has passed away. She died peacefully in her home in the Hollywood Hills on Monday night, succumbing to complications from diabetes. She was 75.

Marshall’s career in the entertainment industry spans over 60 years, going back to The Jackie Gleason Show where she appeared as a dancer. After appearing on hit shows like The Odd CoupleMary Tyler Moore and Happy Days, Marshall’s popularity skyrocketed when she starred alongside Cindy Williams in the hit comedy Laverne & Shirley. After appearing in the pilot of Mork & Mindy, where she and the late Robin Williams shared the screen, Marshall began making the transition to behind the camera.

Joining in the same profession as her brother Garry, Marshall went on to direct some of the most memorable films in the industry. In 1986, she directed Whoopi Goldberg in Jumpin’ Jack Flash. She then directed Tom Hanks in his breakout hit, 1988’s Big, where Hanks plays a teenage boy who awakens in the body of an adult man. Two years later, she directed Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams in the Oscar-nominated biographical drama Awakenings, which Williams had called his performance in the film his favorite role. Marshall would go on to once again team up with Hanks, add Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna to the mix, and tell the story of the first women’s baseball league in the hit film A League Of Their Own.
