Netflix Cancels The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

Sabrina

The Chilling Adventures of Sabria has been canceled at Netflix.

Yesterday, the streaming service announced that the Archie-verse supernatural horror web television series will end after they release part four according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sabrina is just the latest of several series to be canceled by Netflix. These include Ozark, The Kominsky Method, and Dead to Me, all of which are produced from outside of Netflix.

Showrunner for the series, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa commented on the cancellation:

“Working on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been an incredible honor from day one. The cast, beginning with Kiernan as everyone’s favorite teen witch, has been an absolute joy. I am beyond thankful to the crew, writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show. I’m also grateful to our partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., Berlanti Television and Archie Comics for letting us tell the story we wanted to tell, the way we wanted to tell it. We can’t wait for everyone to see part four.”

Sabrina was originally made for broadcast television, specifically FOX. But then it got moved over to The CW and then moved again to Netflix. Here is where it made its home with a two-season 20-episode order. This made up “part one and two”. Then in 2018, it was renewed once again for 16-episodes, which made up “three and four”. They release it this way as a part of a budget-conscious approach to specific programming. Overall critics seemed to enjoy the series, although the audience numbers were slipping according to the Rotton Tomatoes numbers.

I enjoyed the three parts of Sabrina. I do think that ending it with this fourth part is the right move. With the plot growing bigger and bigger as the series carried on, it’s only a matter of time before it could get a little farfetched, even for a supernatural drama. This is what I feel happened with Arrow, after defeating Ra’s al Ghul, I felt the series lost its spark. This I also feel could happen to Sabrina if it continued for too long.
