Netflix In Talks To Acquire Historic Egyptian Theatre

Starting out as a company that sent DVDs straight to your mailbox, Netflix has gone on to be one of the biggest disruptors in the film and TV worlds. Not only have they disrupted the way in which movies and TV are distributed (they have since helped to spur on the move from studios and networks to establish their own streaming services), but they are also disrupting the quality of content audiences expect on direct-to-home releases, really creating an arms race in online content.

But if there is one Achilles heels the streaming giant has, it may be in the theater department. In spite of their deals with independent theater chains like Landmark and Ipic, they have hit some roadblocks with certain festivals and awards groups, as their movies don’t adhere to traditional theatrical release schedules. But that’s not to say that Netflix is completely against the idea of theaters.

According to Deadline, the streamer is in talks to acquire one of the most historic movie theaters of all time — the Egyptian Theatre on the iconic and grungy Hollywood Boulevard. This potential deal with American Cinematheque will reportedly be something of a partnership, with Netflix programming weeknight screenings and Cinematheque doing the stuff on the weekends. So, while this deal is reportedly in the tens of millions of dollars range, it does seem like a mutually beneficial one.

This deal, if it goes through, could give Cinematheque the resources to expand and could give Netflix a home for some of its bigger movies it wants to launch. If nothing else, this is a move that could prove to win over cinemaphiles who hate all the change Netflix is bringing to the industry. Perhaps in indulging in a little bit of old, they can build a bridge between the two philosophies.
