Review: Netflix’s Dead To Me

What do you get when you mix one of the creative minds involved with The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the duo behind Anchorman and Step Brothers, and two incredibly versatile veteran actresses? The answer is one of the most engaging comedy/drama/suspense shows ever to grace Netflix. That series is Dead To Me.

Created by Liz Feldman (Two Broke Girls, The Ellen DeGeneres Show) and executive produced by Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, Dead To Me tells the story of Jen Harding (played by Christina Applegate), a recent widower who tries to keep her family together—as well as her sanity intact—after her husband’s death in a hit-and-run accident. While attending a grief counseling group, Jen befriends free-spirit Judy Hale (played by Linda Cardellini), who offers to be a shoulder to cry on. As the two find commonality in their personal loses, a friendship blooms that brings Jen the levity and balance she needs… until a dark secret begins to slowly creep into the light.

Dead To Me is a perfect blend of sarcastic, wise-cracking comedy, heartbreaking emotion, and attention-grabbing suspense. Applegate and Cardellini are a mesmerizing thespian duo, handling both the comedic and dramatic elements of their characters with the greatest of ease and sincerity. Their portrayal of the Jen/Judy friendship is so relatable, the viewer practically knows them in their own personal lives. That’s attributed to the years of great work Applegate and Cardellini have churned out in both comedy and drama. Working on the series as executive producers as well, Applegate and Cardellini take Feldman’s intriguing and well-written creation and run with it.

Featuring a strong supporting cast—James Marsden, Max Jenkins, Diana Maria Riva, Keong Sim, Valerie Mahaffey, and the legendary Ed Asner—Dead To Me is a beautifully wrapped, multi-layered package that deserves your attention. If you want to laugh, maybe cry, and be wrapped in suspense that will make you consider spending the next five hours or so binging the entire story, this series needs to be added to your list… and move it to the number one position.

Dead To Me is available now on Netflix.
