If there’s been one big mystery in the Star Wars universe, it’s been Solo: A Star Wars Story. First off, the film is an origin story that no one asked for, and it follows a character that’s about as beloved as the franchise itself. With that in mind, audiences (including yours truly) are a bit hesitant about seeing this story come to fruition. With that in mind, the movie already has an uphill battle at the box office.

And then there’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Sure, I personally loved it, but there is a vocal group that did not, and while I find them to be dead wrong, I can’t deny that the sentiment is out there. Some folks feel betrayed by The Last Jedi, and as such, may be hesitant to check out the next entry. And finally, the film releases just one week after Deadpool 2.

This all seems to be culminating in a perfect storm of a flop, right? Well, maybe not.

Fandango advance ticket sales went live on Thursday of last week, and within its first 24 hours, actual sales doubled that of Black Panther in the same time period. At this point, it’s impossible to say if that will continue, but it’s certainly an auspicious start. Black Panther went on to break all kinds of records, and currently sits north of $1.3Bn at the worldwide box office.

Perhaps audiences are more open to a Solo prequel story than us fans? That’s certainly a possibility, but we’ll have to wait and see.
