According to the latest Barside Buzz, Star Wars is to get its own What If? series like the Marvel animated show. The Information comes from Daniel RPK on his Patreon service who says this idea is being developed further. I think even before Marvel’s What If? some Star Wars fans were keen to see something like this for the Star Wars Universe. I personally don’t like this idea for several reasons I will detail below. However, I am also aware of how much in the minority that opinion is.

Have a look online and the most common response to this rumor has been a breadth of potential ideas fans want to see. I do agree the concept is a strong one in an already heavily populated universe. However, for me it works in Marvel because the Multiverse and alt realities are pretty much established canon and always were.

My worry with Star Wars is that we have no Watcher to guide us through these events. There is also no sign of Star Wars taking place in a Multiverse so far. Ergo, the only way I could see it working is through the World Between Worlds. This concept is one I actively fear and yet so far Lucasfilm has treaded carefully with it. You don’t get the feeling the past/future can truly be altered using it. Additionally so far there has been no indication that alt realities can be explored through it.

There is already a ton of fan fiction out there exploring this idea for Star Wars. The majority of which is focused on the question, what if Anakin didn’t become Darth Vader? Cue Anakin and Padme being great parents and living happily ever after raising the twins with uncle Obi-Wan turning up. I can see why Disney would look at this area and see dollar signs. However, I guess I remain a bit of a Star Wars purist despite Disney going in many different directions tonally. I just don’t see the attraction myself. However, as said above, I do get the feeling those who feel like me may be in the minority.

For now of course this is just a rumor, though I have no reason to doubt the source. I’d also caution that just because a project is in development, doesn’t mean it goes into production. Especially when it comes to Star Wars these days. I do assume this would be an animated show, anything else would be far too expensive and severely limit the possibilities.
