The Mandalorian: Giancarlo Esposito Explains Why The Armor Of Moff Gideon Is Reminiscent Of Darth Vader’s

A scene toward the end of the most recent episode of The Mandalorian when the Imperial Office goes in to see Moff Gideon, made me realize how Star Wars makes me feel like a kid again. For a split-second, my mind thought, “Is that Vader?” I quickly caught myself, but the childlike hope I had made me feel good.

Vader is of course gone at this point in the timeline, however, the manacing presence of Moff Gideon, along with his similar armor has one making comparisons. Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Gideon in the Disney Plus series recently spoke with IGN, and during the conversation made some comparisons of his own between Vader and his Moff Gideon. You can check it out below

“I think it’s a throwback to this guy. I mean, it really relates in a way to me, I like to think or imagine in my brain, that he has the kind of power that Darth Vader had. And so, seeing him in his armor and his cape and armed up tells me he’s a warrior. That tells me he is a soldier and has the skills to back that up and hopefully, you’ll see it soon in our [upcoming] episode.”

Now, my comparison was based purely on appearance. I would say it’s a stretch to say that Gideon has the same level of power as Darth Vader. Force power anyway. As far as authoritative power within the Empire, this may be a comparable attribute as Gideon does appear to be both highly-respected and feared.

Esposito went on to make another comparison. This time between Gideon and his Breaking Bad character, Gustavo Fring.

More from the Moff

“Gustavo Fring had his silence. Moff Gideon is not that guy. He’s going to speak out, say what he needs to say. He’s going to inflame people. That makes me think, ‘Oh, he already knows things that he is going to do that you might think as an audience are impossible, but he already is prepared for certain outcomes.’ And that’s what I love about Moff. He’s a thinker and he’s come so close to getting this child. What does he want them for? And that’s the question. What does he really want? Does he want to empower other people or take all the power for himself? Or does he want to rebuild the galaxy or create the world’s most formidable army?”

Moff Gideon is a fine addition to The Mandalorian and to the Star Wars universe in general. We fans truly lucked out having Esposito portraying the character. As the actor said above it will be interesting to see just what kind of person Gideon is as the series goes on. Personally, I don’t think he is pure evil, or even fairly evil. He is a man driven by his goals. He may be misguided in them, or he may know exactly what he wants. We will have to wait and see.
