Matt Reeves Explains Why Gotham Will Look Very Different In The Batman

Reaction To Test Screening Of The Batman Is Positive

Matt Reeves explains why Gotham will look very different in The Batman. Read on for more details.

I’m sure everyone has now seen the trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Batman? Amazing really, considering how little has been filmed of The Batman, that we even got such a teaser. Now Reeves has opened up a little more about his upcoming movie. Reeves discussed The Batman at the DC FanDome event on Saturday. Reeves explained why his version of Gotham is going to look different to any that have come before. First though, Reeves teased how important the City of Gotham was to the story he is telling.

“The nature of what this place is and the history of it is critically important to our story. One of the things that I really wanted to do because it is the center of the story, especially the history of corruption in the city, was I wanted to present it in a way that was really fleshed out. I wanted it to feel like an American city you’d never been to.”

Dunno about you readers but the above statement gives me Court of Owls vibes, Maybe for a future movie? Reeves continued, saying how he chose to make his version of Gotham unique.

“The Burton one had very, very theatrical, beautiful, beautiful sets, and Nolan had the version that he created in Batman Begins, and that was a particular thing and then parts of Chicago and parts of Pittsburgh. What we’re trying to do is create a version of it that you haven’t seen before.”

Gotham will look very different in The Batman

How is Reeves going to pull that off?

“The idea is to go to Liverpool, where there’s all the foundation of the Gothic architecture, and then add all of the more modern structures in through CG, but in a way that when you see the movie, now that I’ve blown it, of course, I’ve told you what it is, but you’ll be like, ‘Hey! Where’s that city? Where do they shoot?’ and so, the aspect of Gotham and realizing it has been for me one of the great pleasures in getting to mount the movie.”

What is strange, is that Reeves does not mention Glasgow? Yet, living very close to that City myself, I know for a fact most of the filming for The Batman so far has taken place in and around Glasgow. They were definitely filming external shots as Battinson was seen shooting scenes as Bruce Wayne on a motorbike. So it is strange that Reeves does not mention Glasgow, but does mention Liverpool. Where, I assume filming has still to take place? Unless of course, it was just aerial footage that was shot of Liverpool to be added to in CG for wide shots? Who knows, but Reeves does specifically mention ‘shooting’ in the City.

As for those hints towards Court of Owls, well a quick check online says I’m not alone in my hypothesis on where this trilogy may be going. Still, since we don’t know the full end game of The Riddler yet, it’s hard to say with any certainty for now? What do you think of The Batman so far? Are you pleased Gotham will look very different in The Batman? Leave your thoughts below as always.
