Streets Of Rage Movie In Development From John Wick Creator

Deadline reports that a Streets of Rage movie is in development from John Wick creator Derek Kolstad. The trade reports they have learned Kolstad is writing the script on spec. The SEGA game, like Sonic the Hedehog is being developed by Sonic producer dj2 Entertainment and Escape Artists (Equalizer franchise) will produce the film adaptation.

Anyone around my age will have heard of Streets of Rage. Well, if you played in video games back in the 80’s and early 90’s. Streets of Rage was a beat-em-up co-op game that spawned sequels right through to the PS4/XBone era. After the success of Sonic and the sequel, one assumes SEGA are looking to replicate this success with Streets of Rage? Though, those are tonally completely different adaptations for obvious reasons.

Given Kolstad involvement, and looking at his previous work, including the recent Nobody, I would expect a big action flick from Streets of Rage with plenty of combat. So far the report does not mention Paramount who released the Sonic movies. It may be therefore that  a distribution studio has not yet been agreed for the movie? dj2 signed an overall deal with Amazon earlier in the year and also is looking to adapt The Game Awards winner It Takes Two for television and film.

Is it possible then that Street of Rage is being developed for Amazon ultimately? The report does not mention this as said above, so I am not 100% sure.

As to whether I think Street of Rage would work as a movie adaptation? Yes, It could work. You’ve likely seen many movies which in some ways were based off of Streets of Rage anyway. You know the drill, two young kick-ass martial artists have to fight their way through hordes of bad guys to save (insert plot reason) or to stop (insert plot reason). As far as game adaptations go this would appear to be a much easier transition than Sonic. Given that Sonic was a successful movie why not try with this franchise? The Sonic sequel is still doing great at the BO currently also.
