The Dark Knight – David S. Goyer Says Ledger’s Joker Not Having An Origin Was Controversial, Received ‘Push-Back’ From WB

Heath Ledger’s turn as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is one of the best portrayals of the character and arguably one of the best performances ever. One of this version’s best attributes is his lack of a backstory. It turns out Warner Bros initially wanted to give the character an origin. Lucky for us this was one time where the studio didn’t get its way.

Speaking at a ComicCon@Home panel, Dark Knight screenwriter David S. Goyer recalled discussing the idea of the Joker not having an origin story. You can check out what he had to say below.

“I do remember when we were talking about, ‘Well what if the Joker doesn’t really have an origin story?. Even after the success of Batman Begins that was considered a very controversial thing and we got a lot of push-back. People were worried.”

If I understand correctly, DC didn’t give Joker an origin until 1951. That’s when Red Hood/vat of chemicals story first came into play. Over the years the character has been given a dozen or so backstories through various forms of content.

If you ask me, the Dark Knight filmmakers took the idea to another level by giving the Joker false stories to tell. Ledger’s Joker tells the ‘scars’ stories so sincerely it’s hard to tell which one, if any, are true. And for a lot of fans, that inconclusiveness somehow adds so much more to this version of the character. However, Jack Nicholson and Joaquin Phoenix’s Jokers are proof it can work with the character on the big screen.
